level 3 : life skills - long term support
Strategies:
1. I plan to show students the usefulness of Circles, as presented in The Little Book of Circle Processes. These Circles require that every participant shows the others respect and a talking piece is used to delegate whose turn it is to speak. Circles can be extremely helpful in resolving conflict and expressing one's feelings in a safe environment. The skills learned by participating in a Circle will assist students with solving conflicts in the real wold. (Pranis, 2005) 2. Problem? Options? Plan? One way to teach students to problem solve is to provide them with a self-control script that they can recite and reflect upon when necessary (Villa, Nevin, & Thousand, 2010). I particularly like this mnemonic device because I feel the steps in POP present a useful strategy for solving life problems AND math problems! See example classroom poster. 3. "Take a Meta-Moment" This process is derived from the RULER curriculum and it is used to provide a step-by-step guide that students can refer to when dealing with an unexpected circumstance. See example classroom poster. 1. Something happens 2. Sense 3. Stop 4. See your best self 5. Strategize 6. Succeed (Brackett & Kremenitzer, 2011) 4. I believe that holding students accountable for turning work in on time is an excellent way to prepare them for the demands of adulthood. 5. Placing students into groups and requiring them to work cooperatively with others they may not normally gravitate towards will prepare students for the working environment. |
