In this video Ken Robinson describes the three principles of human life on which life flourishes. Namely, human beings are naturally diverse (1), naturally curious (2), and inherently creative (3). He argues that these three principles are being contradicted by our current education system. If instead, schools fostered these principles, students would thrive and flourish. I especially liked how Robinson discussed the role that teachers play in facilitating such characteristics. According to Robinson, teachers should "mentor, stimulate, provoke, and engage". He says that it is the role of the teacher to facilitate learning, not simply to facilitate test-taking. Robinson feels that if we can ignite the flame of curiosity in each student they will be motivated to learn. He states that children are "natural learners". If learning is natural it must be nurtured, not standardized. He compares the way that education runs in the US to how it is run in Finland and other countries. According to Robinson, Finland aims to individualize learning. They give high status to the teaching profession and support their teachers. They know that "no school is better than its teachers". In his final remarks, Robinson provides a hopeful metaphor for our education system which he compares to Death Valley. He explains that Death Valley is not dead and under the right conditions, life can flourish.
I really enjoyed this talk. I found it inspiring as a soon-to-be-teacher. I want my students to love school, to grow in school, and to feel that their diversity, curiosity, and creativity are not only supported but valued in my classroom. These three principles of human life will guide my teaching and I will work hard to provide my students with choice. I will implement lessons that make students think. I will utilize anticipatory sets that hook students so that they are engaged. I will aim high every day and continue to raise the bar because I know that students are natural learners.
